This painting depicts the miracle at the wedding in Cana, where Jesus turns water into wine. Here, He is talking to His mother, Mary, and a servant. He is telling the servant to fill more pots with water. The pots are all around Jesus. This is because He will always give us what we need. Additionally, both Mary and Jesus are sitting on the floor and eating off banana leaves with their hands because that is how people eat at traditional Indian weddings. The servant is listening to Jesus’s instructions while sitting on a moda, which is a traditional Indian, woven stool that is still popular in many Indian households. By painting it so that everyone follows Indian traditions, I am helping South Indian people see themselves in and feel closer to Christ. This is important because God became human so that we may feel closer to Him.
